A configuration management system controls, maintains and verifies the version of all 'configuration items'. It accounts for all the assets and configurations within the organisation, hence its relationship with asset management.

It also has a strong relationship with change management, with ITIL stating that the configuration management system "identifies relationships between the item that is to be changed, and any other components of the infrastructure".
